My family and I all went to Amakusa which is very close to Kumamoto city. From Fukuoka it only takes about 2 1/2 hours to get there and the scenery was just amazing. The history is pretty cool actually... the mayor from years back decided to connect all the islands (5 of them) with bridges and everyone thought he was nuts for even thinking of this. His theory was if they build it they will come and they did...
this place was simply amazing with points, bays, islands, reefs, beaches and lots of great looking fishing spots. If you ever get the chance go!!! Especially you guys from the Nagasaki area, it should be pretty easy for you to get there.

We spent one day dolphin watching and there are about 300 wild dolphins that run wild and it's great to see they haven't been slaughtered for their meat. Daily tours run and tourists are from everywhere trying to get a glimpse of these beauties of the ocean!!!

So on with the report, we booked a boat called the Ebisu-Maru who had a really nice homepage and his reports were always showing lots of fish being caught. The captain is a second generation fishermen and their boat was just newly bought last February. The price for a half days fishing is only 9,000 yen and you can get free rod rentals. I had my own rod but for my father in law this was great. Also bait or live shrimps and all the set ups are included too.

We left at 5am and were fishing at 6 am. The father in law got a fish almost right away and it was a huge pink fish. I think it was called a kurobo or something. (Adam?) At 7 am I got a massive hit on my new Daiwa Seapower V 80-270.....

I was just letting my setup hang about 1-2m off the bottom in about 65m. This fish hit hard and right away it was game on. I took it slow not putting too much stress on the fish. At first I really had to loosen the drag because the rod tip was diving under the boat, not good. After a 10 minute fight we couldn't believe our eyes, it was a massive snapper that legends are made of.

The captain took real good care of the fish and poked it's air bladder so it wouldn't die on us. Honestly my hands were shaking...

The snapper came to 90cm at 8kg making it the biggest fish this year in Amakusa and the captains boat!

So after that all the fish were small compared to my beast but we ended up with about 15 snapper in total. I think I'm going again and this will be a more common trip for me to make now because I think I have snapper fever. I love what the captain said.... you should just quit snapper fishing now because everything else will not compare to this day out.

Here's a shot of the setup:

I made a video for everyone to enjoy and check out the middle to last part where I got the local supermarket butcher to prepare all my fish. It was well worth the money because I was so tired after returning home and didn't feel like cutting and preparing all the fish. Guess how much it was? Only 2,000 yen.
